拍品描述
A SILVER-INLAID BRONZE FIGURE OF A JINA, SOUTH INDIA, 10TH - 11TH CENTURY
Finely cast, standing 'sky clad' in the body-abandoning pose (kayotsarga), his slender arms extending from broad shoulders below a fleshy waist, his chest centered by a silver-inlaid lozenge-form srivatsa (sacred) mark. His serene face and full lips form a calm smile. The silver-inlaid almond-shaped eyes are below thick lids and gently arched brows, flanked by elongated earlobes. The hair shows tight curls, the head is backed by a halo.

Provenance: German trade. By repute from a noted German private collection.
Condition: Condition commensurate with age. Extensive wear, small losses, cracks and nicks. Encrustations, surface scratches. Some areas of the feet and base may be later replacements. Fine, golden-brown patina with areas of malachite and cuprite encrustation. Displaying nicely, despite the tribute paid to a millennium of age.

Weight: 374.9 g
Dimensions: Height 14.5 cm

This Jina, having obtained complete liberation, is depicted naked, hence the term ‘sky-clad’, standing in the yogic meditation pose kayotsarga (body-abandonment), with elongated limbs demonstrating his superhuman character, expressing well-being and emphasizing the spiritual over the physical.

Jainism, one of India's great religions, was a reformist movement developed in reaction to Brahmanical Hindu traditions and practices such as caste division and animal sacrifice. The 24th Jina, Mahavira, was an elder contemporary of the historical Buddha living between 599-527 BCE. Though often cited as the founder of the faith, Mahavira is considered a compiler of teachings and practices that existed for eons. The central tenet of Jainism is strict adherence to the principles of non-violence (ahimsa) with followers taking extreme care not to harm any living creature.
