Leo Stein (1872 - 1947); the brother of famous American Writer, Gertrude Stein. Oil/Canvas; "Settignano, Italy" Signed Lower right recto, 1934? & with 1980's APF Custom Gold Leaf Frame. Good condition, short, small tear to canvas. Height of art 21 1/2 inches (54.6 cm.) X width of art 25 5/8 inches (65.1 cm.). NOTE: The bulk of Leo Stein's art works are in the Leo Stein Collection at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Department of Yale University Library. Taught to paint by Cezanne and Matisse in Paris, after his split with his sister over her relationship with Alice B. Toklas in 1914, Stein worked as a journalist in America. Eventually, back in Italy, he turned to the painting of female nudes and views of the Italian Hills around his home in Settignano until his death in Florence. Few of his paintings remain outside Institutions or the Stein Family.
