JUGYOKU: A WOOD NETSUKE OF A SCULPTOR CARVING A NIO HEAD
By Ryukosai Jugyoku, signed Jugyoku 壽玉 with kakihan
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved as a sculptor giving the finishing touches to the head of a Nio figure, his facial expression amusingly mirrored in the expression of Nio. Two himotoshi through the base and signed JUGYOKU with the artist's kakihan.

HEIGHT 3 cm, LENGTH 4.4 cm

Condition: Good condition, some wear, the toes reattached to the foot, tiny chip to the himotoshi and a small hole at the sculptor's robe connecting the two himotoshi.
Provenance: Collection Gabor Orszagh, Budapest, Hungary, purchased from Michael Strone.
