HIRAFUKU HYAKUSUI (1877-1933): TWELWE PAINTINGS OF BIRDS
Japan, late Meiji period (1868-1912). Ink and watercolor on paper. Finely painted with ducks, pigeons, a cockerel, an owl, and other smaller birds, depicted perched on flowering branches, on the ground or in flight. All paintings with calligraphy and sealed. With a carton storage box.

Condition: Good condition with minor wear and soiling, water stains, few show minor short tears to the edges.
Provenance: German private collection, acquired in the German auction trade.

Dimensions: c. 100 x 40 cm each

In 1899 Hyakusui Hirafuku, son of the painter Suian Hirafuku, graduated from the Japanese-style painting division of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He exhibited paintings at the Bunten and Teiten, but he also turned his hand to lithographs, woodblock prints and mixed-media illustrations. He contributed to many early 20th century magazines, such as H?sun. He published Fuji issh? - A Tour of Fuji in 1907 and Sansui zuien ki - Travel notes on mountains and sea in 1914. In the later part of his career, he was primarily active as a painter.
