HERON', AFTER SHOKEI KENKO
Japan, Edo Period (1615-1868). Watercolor, gouache, and ink on silk. Finely painted with a heron perched high up on a tree branch gazing towards the observer. Sealed to the right margin. Mounted as a hanging scroll with brocade paper.

Important notice: Please note that we will need to remove the ivory roller ends before shipping / handing over the item. The roller ends are not part of this offer.
Inscriptions: The reverse inscribed 'Silk painting of a heron by Shokei'.
Condition: Good condition, minor wear, and some touch ups to the white plumage of the heron.

Kenko Shokei (active 1478-1506) was a painter who began painting in an style influenced by Geiami, then produced 'shigajiku', hanging scrolls with a landscape below and poems and inscriptions by Zen priests above, and eventually developed a mature landscape style.
