A MANCHU-MONGOLIAN TRAVEL PERMIT, LATE QING DYNASTY
North China, Inner Mongolia, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century. Watercolor and ink on cloth, framed behind glass. depicting the eight Buddhist emblems (Bajixiang) centered by an elephant carrying a monkey, rabbit, and bird. The sides with Manchurian and Mongolian inscriptions as well as the eagle of the Russian empire.

Condition: Good condition, minor wear, little tears, minor soiling, the frame with a few small nicks.
Provenance: Ex-collection Late Paul Rutten, Amsterdam. French private collection, Paris.

Dimensions: Image size 76 x 48 cm, Size incl. mounting 97.7 x 69.8 cm

The present object seems to be a travel document for traversing between the inner and the outer Mongolian border.
