Throughout Wang Jiyuan's long career as an artist he painted using both traditional Chinese media of ink and color on silk or paper, in addition to Western media of oil on canvas or board. The roots of his approach can be linked to his first teacher, Liu Haisu (1896-1994), with whom he studied in Shanghai. Studying in France and Japan during 1926-1931 further exposed Wang Jiyuan to diverse aesthetic approaches. Well-established in elite artistic circles in Shanghai, the artist travelled to the United States in 1941, arriving first in San Francisco, but eventually settling in New York where he established the School of Chinese Brushwork in 1948, inspiring scores of students in the decades that followed. Ever an advocate for Chinese painting, Wang Jiyuan produced numerous publications explaining the theory and approach to Chinese painting methods. In 1971, Wang Jiyuan and Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) created a joint exhibition Contemporary Chinese Brushwork at the Smithsonian Institution.
