A RARE CHINESE HUANGHUALI WAISTED BABY DAYBED, TA Prob 17th/18th Century With an open-carved back frame formed by a straight top rail rounding the corners to the back posts enclosing the caracterizing open-work carved dragon panels, the straight long arms continuing down to form the front posts, the hard bed top set within a rectangular frame reveals the attractive patterned wooden patina, joined by stepped stretchers and the footrest. The HuangHuaLi wood displays a dense hardwood and translucent shimmering surface with abstractly figured patterns appearing like ghost faces motif. The use of the daybed was manifold - during the day, it served as a sitting platform; at night a bed. Due to its simple design and light weight, the daybed was a versatile piece of furniture, easily suited for both indoor and outdoor purposes. Woodblock prints dating from the Ming dynasty often show scholars or ladies relaxing on daybeds in garden settings or along riverbanks.
