JADE RUYI SCEPTRE WITH ZITAN HANDLE

拍品描述: The large ruyi head inlaid with oval shaped Chinese jade medallion, open-work carved with a flying crane interspersed by dense of scrolling foliage, the curved shaft with finely polished surface show the dense hardwood with feathery fine grain and brown-purplish patina. Two similar scene jade plaques embellished on the central wand handle. All enclosed within shaped cartouche. The jade shows pale-celadon moist milky appearance with clean tone. Adorned with pair of golden tassel at the ends. The ruyi, considered one of the Eight Treasures, was a scepter which represented power and authority.
The ruyi was originally a short sword with a sword-guard used for self-defense or gesturing. There is some speculation that it may have evolved from a back scratcher.
The head of the ruyi is similar to that of the LingZhi or "fungus of immortality" and the lotus.
The name "ruyi" is usually translated as "as you wish" or "in accordance with your desires".
The ruyi now symbolizes good wishes and prosperity.
