The first a Hirado ware jar, the globular body decorated in shades
of cobalt blue with pigeons amid flowering vines extending up over
the flat fitted lid surmounted by a large Chinese lion (karashishi) finial,
the glaze with a faint celadon tint; the second an Arita cup-washer,
the interior of the steep-sided bowl painted in underglaze blue with
a kestrel on a cliff near cresting waves, the exterior with floral sprays
above blue string bands bordering a large saw-tooth band encircling
the tall foot (surface wear).
