Lot Essay The so-called 'vase carpets' are a distinct group within the corpus of Safavid carpets that all share a distinctive weaving structure. The carpet offered here is a classic example of this type. In the 1976 exhibition, Carpets of Central Persia, organized by the eminent carpet scholar May Beattie, a group of carpets were brought together that shared a similar technical structure quite unlike other carpets of the same period. Beattie referred to the weave as ‘vase-technique’ and the name for the technique and the group originates from the design found on several of the more notable examples (M. Beattie, Carpets of Central Persia, Birmingham, 1976, p.11). The vase design is distinguished by a directional motif of a decorative vase issuing a profusion of stemmed flowers, tendrils and palmettes creating an intricate overall lattice pattern. While not all ‘vase-technique’ carpets include an actual vase in the design, it is the distinctive structure that dictates the inclusion in the group. This particular vase-design carpet displays a delicate overall design of spiraling tendrils, palmettes and smaller blossoms all on a claret red ground but without a decorative vase. Please note that due to the current Iranian sanctions, transactions involving Iranian-origin Property may require authorization from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to be exported outside the US. Christie's may be able to obtain this license on your behalf but kindly note that it may take, at minimum, 9 to 12 months to obtain.
