(53 cm.) high, 14 1/4 in. (36 cm.) wide, 9 1/4 in. (23.5 cm.) deep Almost certainly commissioned by Thomas Belasyse, 1st Earl of Fauconberg of Newborough (1699-1774), Newburgh Priory, near Coxwold, North Yorkshire. Thence by descent to Lady Charlotte Wynn Belasyse (d. 1825), eldest daughter of Henry, 2nd Earl of Fauconberg (d.1802). Thence to her sister Lady Anne, who married Sir George Wombwell, 2nd Bart. (1769-1846). Thence to their son Sir George Wombwell, 3rd Bart., who inherited the Newburgh Priory. Thence by descent to Sir Frederick Philip Alfred William Wombwell, 6th Bart. (1910-1977), by whom sold Frank Lumb & Sons Ltd., Harrogate, Yorkshire. With Simon Redburn, London. Gerald Hochschild, Paris. The Hochschild Collection of Highly Important English Furniture; Sotheby's, London, 1 December 1978, lot 47. Acquired from Partridge, London, by Ann and Gordon Getty in 1979.
Lot Essay Newburgh Priory, near Coxwold, North Yorkshire, stands on the site of an Augustinian Priory, founded in 1145. Following the dissolution of the monasteries it was acquired by the Belasyse family, later Earls Fauconberg. Thomas Belasyse, 1st Earl of Fauconberg of Newborough, served as a Lord of the Bedchamber to George II between 1738 and 1760. Other pieces from Newburgh Priory are in the collection of Temple Newsam, Leeds, one of which had also been handled by Lumb of Harrogate (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, London, 1978, vol. I, p. 220, fig. 275, vol. II, p. 384, fig. 510).
