A BRONZE FIGURE OF YAMANTAKA AND YAMI, 18TH CENTURY
Tibetan-Chinese. The buffalo-headed deity and his consort cast standing in pratyalidhasana on the back of a recumbent bull above a prostrate figure on a lotus base, adorned in jewels, wearing a band of severed heads around the body, the head neatly detailed with bushy eyebrows, wrinkled nose and flaring nostrils, the flaming hair surmounted by a tiara of skulls. His buffalo displaying a ferocious expression with bushy eyebrows, flared nostrils, and snarling mouth.

Provenance
: From a private collection in Berlin, Germany.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, remnants of gilt, some casting flaws, small nicks, shallow surface scratches, minuscule losses, small soldering repair to Yami's foot. The base has been re-sealed, probably in the late 19th or early 20th century.

The figure is separately cast in three sections with Yamantaka and Yami both as solid figures, and the hollow bull and lotus base in one piece.

Yamantaka (Sanskrit) or Vajrabhairava (Tibetan) is the "destroyer of death" in Vajrayana Buddhism. Of the several deities in this Buddhist pantheon that are named Yamantaka, the most well-known belongs to the Anuttarayoga Tantra class of deities popular within the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Compare a related bronze of Yamantaka in yabyum, also with a standing Yami, dated to the 19th century, in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1880.2466.

十八世紀大威德明王銅像
漢藏。水牛角大水牛頭神和他的明妃站在一頭臥牛的背上,牛腳踏一個跪伏的人身。明王佩戴華麗的珠寶以及一條掛著頭顱的佩帶。面部濃眉大鼻,頭髮成火焰狀,右腿屈,左腿伸,整個身姿右高左低,形成強勁動勢,碩大的水牛頭突現威猛無敵之力。

來源:德國柏林私人收藏。
品相:狀況良好,磨損,鎏金殘留,一些鑄造缺陷,小刻痕,表面淺劃痕,微小缺損,明妃的腳有焊接修復。底座可能已重新密封,應是在十九世紀末或二十世紀初。

在梵文中,閻魔敵的名稱(Yamāntaka)意為終結者,它的意思是“終結亡神、勝伏死主“。
