The well-known and continuing firm of Hamilton & Inches, goldsmiths and jewellers of George Street, Edinburgh, was formed in 1866 by James Hamilton (d. 1883) and his nephew, Robert Kirk Inches (16 February 1840 – 19 July 1918). Hamilton had considerable experience in the trade, he having been for more than 20 years the principal assistant at Mackay, Cunningham & Co. goldsmiths and jewellers of Princes Street, Edinburgh.
R.K. Inches was knighted by George V during his tenure as Lord Provost of Edinburgh. Hamilton & Inches remained largely in the Inches family until 1992 when ownership passed to Asprey of Bond Street, London.
