diameter of largest 7 3/4in (19.5cm)
Provenance
Estate of Peter J. Fergusson, Wellesley, Massachusetts
Lots 32 and 33 are from the collection of noted architectural and landscape historian Peter J. Fergusson. Dr. Fergusson held an endowed faculty chair and was professor of Art History at Wellesley College for over four decades, where he was celebrated as both an inspiring teacher and an award-winning scholar. While he specialized in the architecture of medieval Europe and garden history, he appreciated design in all forms and periods. Commemorative portrait medallions originated in the Italian Renaissance, but its liveliest expression was arguably during the French Art Deco period. Dr. Fergusson amassed his collection of art medals dating from the 1890s to the 1930s over a span of at least two decades, mostly acquired from London dealers. He cherished his medals, displaying them prominently on the walls and mantlepieces of his Wellesley home and in his mews house in London. Artfully arranged, the medals held their own place amongst Dr. Fergusson's diverse collections of Old Master drawings and paintings; Renaissance furniture; American and English Arts & Crafts to Modernist decorative arts, including studio pottery by the Martin Brothers, Dame Lucie Rie and Magdalene Odundo; and modern British painting. Bonhams is pleased to present this collection, which shows his discerning eye and appreciation for this unique art form that encapsulates memory, social context, and design.
