The cover is carved through thick layers of red and green lacquer to a yellow diaper ground with a bracket-lobed cartouche enclosing a five-clawed dragon embracing a flaming pearl amidst cloud scrolls and above rocky outcrops emerging from crashing waves, the corners outside the cartouche with eight precious objects borne on scrolls. The sides of the box and cover are similarly carved with rectangular panels containing composite floral scrolls, surrounded by a dense ground of lingzhi scrolls. The interiors and base are lacquered black. The base is incised with a Qianlong six-character mark.
