By Sybil Dunlop (1889-1968), an Arts and Crafts silver tankard, London 1926, in the George III manner, baluster form, domed hinged cover with a pierced thumb-piece, silver-mounted horn scroll handle, spot-hammered decoration, on a circular foot, the underside inscribed 'George Spencer Watson', height 20.2cm, approx. weight 22.2oz. Provenance: A Private Collection. Duke's Auctioneers, Dorchester. Mary Spencer Watson, (1913-2006) George Spencer Watson, (1869-1934) George Spencer Watson R.O.I, R.P., A.R.A., R.A, was an English portrait artist, who studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1889. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1889 and also the Paris Salon. His work A Lady in Black (1922) is owned by the Tate Collection. In 1923 he bought Dunshay Manor on the Isle of Purbeck. His daughter Mary Spencer Watson was an English Sculptor, who was born in London and spent much of her life in Dorset. She was greatly inspired by the stone masons of the Purbeck quarries, and her work can be seen at Cambridge University and Wells Cathedral amongst other sites.
