Like their closest relatives the sloths and armadillos, it belongs to the order of the Xenartha and the Pilosa. The Giant Anteater has, as its Latin name indicates, three large long claws on its front paws. The mammal is found throughout much of Central and South America and feeds exclusively on ants and termites. Their excellent sense of smell helps them find food, and the animals use their strong claws to break open termite burrows. The most striking feature is their long, thin snout measuring up to 45 cm, which has only a tiny mouth opening. The tongue, up to 60 cm long, is covered with sticky mucous membrane, on which the insects stick and are devoured in large numbers. The specimen presented here was completely restored by a Swiss taxidermy artist. Der Grosse Ameisenb?r hat, wie es der lateinische Name bezeichnet, drei grosse lange Krallen an den Vorderpfoten. Das S?ugetier kommt in weiten Teilen Mittel- und Südamerikas vor und ern?hrt sich ausschliesslich von Ameisen und Termiten. Ihr ausgezeichneter Geruchssinn hilft ihnen bei der Nahrungssuche, mit den starken Krallen brechen die Tiere Termitenbauten auf. Das auff?lligste Merkmal ist ihre lange, dünne und bis zu 45 cm messende Schnauze, die nur eine winzige Mund?ffnung besitzt. Die bis zu 60 cm lange Zunge ist mit klebriger Schleimhaut belegt, worauf die Insekten kleben bleiben und in grosser Anzahl verschlungen werden. The Purchaser is therefore invited to inspect an item prior to the auction and, possibly with the support of an independent specialist advisor, to form its own opinion of the correspondence between the lot and the catalogue description. For the specifications of the items the print edition of the catalogue in the German language (including any later amendments) shall be exclusively applicable.
