A LACQUERED WOOD GIGAKU KARURA (GARUDA) MASK, 1900s

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). Finely carved as a Karura, covered in gold, red, and black with a fierce expression, large bulging eyes, and bold furrowed brows, the reticulated beak holding a gold pearl. The interior with a paper label reading 'Kokuhou gigaku-men, karura-men' ('National treasure Gigaku mask, Karura mask').
Provenance: Czech private collection.
Condition: The mask with some wear, a few chips, flakes, and breakages at the very top which has been restored.

The Karura is a divine hybrid human-bird creature based on the Garuda (the name is a transliteration) and one of the main character masks worn by performers of the ancient Japanese courtly dance art of gigaku.
Literature comparison: Compare a similar mask, possibly the original, transmitted by the Todai-ji temple and currently in the collection of the Miho Museum, accession number H-39.1.
