W: 39cm
?FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION
?A Large 'famille verte' Birthday Dish with Xiwangmu, Kangxi, six character underglaze blue mark of Chenghua,
finely enamelled in the centre with Xiwangmu, attended by a deer pulling a wine jar in a chariot, a maidservant and three iron red bats, within two double underglaze blue rings, the underside of the rim with different forms of the shou character in iron red.??A similar dish is illustrated as no. 102 in 'The complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum : Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours', Hong Kong 1999.
It is described in the header as a 'design of fairy maidens offering birthday congratulations'.
The dish depicts Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, who is herself a symbol of longevity, as are the deer, the jar of wine and the bats.
The dish would have been considered very suitable as a birthday gift for a Court Lady,.
A very similar dish from the Roy Davids collection, previously purchased from Marchant, was sold at Bonhams London, 6th November 2014, as lot 68, in the sale of the Roy Davids Collection.
It is possible that the present example may be the same dish.
From a European private collection.
