All measurements are approximate. Condition: Good condition. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: From a private New York collection. Purchased from Brunk Auctions over 10 years ago. Notes: Ruyi wands are ceremonial scepters and talismans symbolizing power and good fortune. The literal translation is "to make things happen according to your wishes" or "to be used as desired." During the historical evolution of Chinese ruyi to be used "as desired," they have seen use as backscratchers, ritual objects in Buddhism and later Daoism, pointers for public speakers, talking sticks or "conversation batons" for court gatherings, prized icons of political power and wealth, and auspicious gifts expressing best wishes. By the Ming dynasty a ruyi scepter was required to speak in court and had evolved into a status symbol, with officials openly competing with one another in terms of carving and luxurious materials for commissioning their ruyis. This one-of-a-kind ruyi wand is imbued with a unique sort of whimsy. It is made completely out of porcelain, an impressive feat of ceramic and pyrotechnic skills, and is coated in a variety of glazes and enamels which vary widely in their type and application. The shaft of the wand is glazed entirely in a bright yellow glaze and features a light crazing throughout. The three main plaques featuring the lucky characters of Fu, Lu, and Shou feature light and dark blue enamels forming floral patterns underneath the raised, gold-colored characters surrounded by Greek key bands. The two smaller character plaques feature yet more glazes and enamels in different colors. Its bright coloring is eye-catching and fanciful and its shape is complex, striking when viewed up close or from afar, making it a perfect addition to any collection. A similar blue and white ruyi wand was previously sold by Christie's New York on March 21, 2019, as lot 1845. 1875。 High resolution photos can be found here. https://oag.smugmug.com/March-Asian-Works-of-Art-1-2022
