A Chinese carved white jade incense holder dating from the Qianlong period with a hardwood stand. The cylindrical jade pillar is carved with a mountain landscape with a pine tree, a stream, and a pair of figures. Dimensions are: 9 inches tall X 1 1/2 inches in diameter, 22.86 cm X 3.81 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Very minor chipping to the rim, overall good condition. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: The lot comes with a copy of provenance documentation. From a collector in Atlanta, Georgia. She and her late husband owned a department store in Atlanta, and they were world travelers. Most of the items in their collection were acquired by them from the 1940s to the 1970s. Notes: This vertical jade incense holder is truly regal, standing proud and erect. The pure texture and clear tone of the jade yield a landscape carving of deep and evocative perspective. The tall stems of the plants in the scene climb upwards, encroaching into the space of the distant, soaring mountains and enhancing the verticality of the incense holder. The branches of the pine trees and the leaves of the banana trees stretch around the thin perimeter of the incense holder, drawing the eye around the piece to encircle it in its entirety. The rocky walls of the sheer mountains point towards an open air pagoda near the center of the incense holder, framed by the dense foliage of the scene. A pair of figures stand before the pagoda, forming the focal point of the piece. A scholar leads his acolyte forth, his wise smile betraying his wealth of knowledge. The whole scene is densely packed with detail, from the pine needles and clouds above to the waves on the rushing river below. It is fascinating to study, both for its intricacy and for its masterful carving, which renders the scene in stunning clarity. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has two similar examples in its collection: 21.175.84 and 21.175.53.
