A Chinese round white jade screen dating from the 18th to 19th century. It comes with a fitted box. Both sides are carved with deep relief landscape scenes with pine trees. One side has four horses, while the other side has a wild beast hunt. Dimensions are: 7 1/2 inches in diameter X 3/4 inches thick, 19.1 cm X 1.9 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is chipping throughout. Natural inclusions. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: From a private Dallas, Texas collection. Notes: At first glance, this creamy white jade appears akin to the luminescence of the moon. The jade is just as pure and radiant, with its many carved facets reflecting light in different directions. It is round and disc-like, featuring an intricately carved landscape on either side from a distant vantage point. One side depicts a small herd of wild horses in a gentle and tranquil landscape, while the other side contrasts this placid scene with a thrilling lion hunt. Both scenes show a high level of detail, exquisite in both jade quality and carving execution. The overall shape is regular, and the lines and edges are crisp with a rich jade texture. It is undoubtedly imbued with high artistic value.Double-sided reliefs on jade screens are extremely rare; most of the existing works of the same type are single-sided. The excessive labor and skill required to execute such a complex and delicate piece suggests imperial origins. And indeed, this fact, coupled with the premier quality of the brilliant, white jade and its highly polished surface, allows an attribution to the Ruyi Pavilion Workshop built by the imperial court during the Qianlong period. The Emperor Qianlong's taste for massive jade landscape carvings like this stems from his mutual affinity for landscape paintings. In fact, the term "jade painting" to describe this style of mimicking the visual subjects and effects of ink painting through jade carving was coined by the emperor himself. It is easy to see why he appreciated it so; this white jade table screen conveys the majesty of its serene landscapes without losing its innate luster and radiant sheen. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City houses a similar object within its collection which dates to the Qianlong period under accession number 02.18.652. Similar examples also dating from the Qianlong period have been sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong on October 8, 2013, as lot 3042 and at Bonhams Hong Kong on June 4, 2015, as lot 20. 3042。 High resolution photos can be found here. https://oag.smugmug.com/March-Asian-Works-of-Art-1-2022
