拍品描述: Himalayan Art. A gilt bronze Sahasrabhuya thousand-armed Avalokitesvara figure Tibet, early 20th century . Figure of Avalokitesvara in its manifestation called Sahasrabhuya or ""of a thousand arms"". The Sanskrit term Avalokitesvara, which literally means ""the one who listens to the sound"", therefore prayer, already appears in some written fragments of the 5th century as one of the manifestations of the Buddha, the Buddha of mercy, better known in the Far East as Guanyin (China) or Kannon (Japan). This peculiar iconography of Avalokitesvara was popular in the region of the Himalaya and linked to the so-called ""esoteric Buddhism"", which prescribes the image of the standing deity with eight arms, each of them holding an attribute, and other arms that act as lateral wings. Furthermore, the head is replaced by a pyramid of eleven superimposed faces. The origin of this iconography is to be traced back to an ancient legend stating that the head of Avalokitesvara multiplied trying to bestow compassiong to the suffering mankind. Cm 32,50 x 60,00.
