A YORUBA CULTURE IVORY FIGURE OF A PREGNANT WOMAN
Nigeria, Yoruba culture, late 19th to early 20th century. The kneeling pregnant female figure holding a staff with a bird, wearing a collar, bracelets, and a double strand of beads around her waist, the hair arranged in braids. With exaggerated delineation of facial features and three incised marks on each cheek and forehead, the breasts extend forward and curve outward and the genitals are explicit. The ivory of a deep orange color.

Kneeling female figures, often nude, are common in Yoruban art. In this pose, the figure represents a supplicant before the orisha, or deity, on whose altar it is placed. The image beautifies the altar and thereby honors orisha.

Condition: Good condition, with age cracks and wear. The bird staff with minor chips and the object she was holding with the other hand missing. All as visible in the images provided.
Provenance: Ex-Collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above.
