A VERY LARGE KORANSHA PORCELAIN PLATE
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). Decorated in underglaze blue and with colored enamels and gold. Supported on a recessed foot, painted with a peony blossom, a rectangular reserve with stylized crashing waves and calligraphy within a floral-patterned border. The underside rim with three floral scrolls and signed on the recessed base in underglaze blue Fukagawa sei beneath the orchid mark of Koransha.

Fukagawa is the family name of the founder and owner of the Koransha company. The combination of the orchid mark of Koransha and signature Fukagawa sei/zo appears to have been used until the company was split; the Fukagawa Porcelain Company was then re-established in the late Meiji era.

Condition: Good condition with firing flaws, surface scratches and wear.
Provenance: Ex-Collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
