A STILL LIFE OF CHINESE ANTIQUES BY ARSèNE KENNES
Belgium, September 1916. Oil on canvas. Depicting a Chinese porcelain figurine on a wooden pedestal, below a Chinese cloth. In the background a dish decorated with flower motif.

Condition: Good condition with signs of wear, some paint flakes, crackled paint, the frame with a few chips, cracks, and material loss.
Provenance: Ex-Collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.

Dimensions: 70.5 x 83.5 cm (incl. frame), 54 x 67.8 cm (canvas)

Mounted in a golden wood frame with stucco details (1).

Arséne Kennes (Herzele 1890 - Ghent 1940) was a Belgian painter and draughtsman. He was educated at the Academie in Antwerp and worked in Frans Courtens' studio at the higher institute in Antwerp. Kennes was one of the co-founders of the art circle "Hollando - Belge". He also gained fame as a painter and draftsman of portraits, figures, landscapes, as well as still lifes and flowers. His work can be found in the museums of Antwerp and is also listed in several Belgian art books.
