拍品描述
A PALE CELADON JADE CARVING OF AN ELEPHANT AND BOY
China, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to Republic period (1912-1949). Finely carved standing four-square with its head turned to the left side, wearing a saddlecloth decorated with rocks and ruyi-clouds, surmounted by a small boy clinging onto its back. The semi-translucent stone of a pale celadon tone with white inclusions and striations.

This carving is full of auspicious imagery, such as the motif of boys riding or climbing on an elephant representing the wish for good fortune, as the phrase 'ride an elephant' is close in pronunciation to 'good fortune' (jixiang).

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear.
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
