Carved lacquer brushpots are rare and examples showing guests arriving for an elegant gathering are rarer still. More typically, these brush holders depict scholars already assembled and actively engaged in art appreciation and other leisure activities together.
An intricately carved lacquer brushpot on this theme from the Qing court collection, now in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Jiufang Li, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, pl. 42. Compare another in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated in James C. Y. Watt and Barbara Ford, East Asian Lacquer: The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, New York, 1991, cat. no. 44.
