The iconography, how to depict Rolpay Dorje in art, shows a great deal of variations. Here the high ranking lama appears youthful, dressed in a magnificent red robe lavishly painted with gold, sitting in dhyanasana on an elaborate lotus throne, its back torana, with two wrathful green water monsters makaras, and a protective garuda at the top. The lama is identified by his prominent folded yellow hat, associated with the First Panchen Lama, however typical for the Jangkya Hutuktu of Beijing, the vase, bumpa, with the elixir of immortality in his left hand, his right hand in vitarkamudra holding a lotus flower supporting the book of profound wisdom, thus indicating his relation with the Bodhisattva Manjushri (the sword here omitted) of whom he is considered a reincarnation. Notable is that the lipoma on his right cheek, which occasionally is seen on sculptures is here omitted as it commonly is on paintings. In front a table with religious instruments: his begging bowl, a mirror, his vajra and bell, a drum damaru, a vessel for holy water, a set of offering cups and a flaming butter lamp in the centre. Period: Late 18th century/ca. 1800. The painting has later fittings. Dimensions: 38x22.5 cm (motif), 53x29.5 cm (with fittings).
