Iran or India, mid-19th century
Various adventures of Rustam from the borzunameh. Rustam, wearing a white tiger mask and riding an elephant, fights a "div", around a block of text of nine lines and another of one line.
Gouache and gold on paper, 29 lines of text in four columns interrupted by coloured bands. Each page is illustrated with a scene from one of the episodes of the borzu-nameh. Old framing label on two of them: "New American Framing Co 12-10/A Lindsay Street. Calcutta 16". (Wear).
Sight size : 50 x 29 cm
Provenance: Adrien Massonaud, Consul General of France in Calcutta from 1960 to 1964. Acquired at that time from an antique dealer in Calcutta.
