The color blue arrived in China during the Yuan period (1279-1368). It is cobalt blue, exchanged by the oriental merchants travelling on the silk road. Before the 15th century, the use of this blue imported from the East was poorly mastered. The blue mixed with the white of the porcelain, giving a greyish and opaque appearance to the pieces. During the reigns of Yongle (1402-1424) and Xuande (1425-1435), the quality of the craftsmen improved, and the blue underglaze decoration of the porcelain was strongly emphasized on the white background. During the reign of Emperor Jiajing (1521-1567), Chinese craftsmen discovered blue pigments in the empire. This blue, named Huiqing, literally blue of the Hui minority, will be mixed with cobalt blue. It is this mixture which makes all the specificity of the blue-white porcelain of this period. Indeed, one can observe a unique and innovative color, different from the previous blues, presenting violet reflections.
