拍品描述

A small covered shippo vase, forming a perfume burner, made of gilt bronze and polychrome cloisonné enamels on a light brown and beige speckled background, the high body decorated with a phoenix on one side, the other side bearing a cardinal's coat of arms, the sides and shoulder decorated with flowers and stylized motifs, and enhanced by two curved handles rising to a point, the lid presenting openings.
The ormolu foot is engraved on the rim with the kanji and katakana inscription:
Hôtei Daishikyo Foulon Denka "Offered to
Cardinal Foulon" and the date October 1891.
The base bears the kanji and katakana mark "Nihon Kyoto Jean Inabata".
H. 15 cm
(Slight wear of the gilding, very slight deformation of the lid)
NB The coat of arms on the vase is that of Cardinal Joseph-Alfred Foulon (1823-1893), archbishop of Lyon from 1887 to 1893, who became cardinal in 1889. They are surmounted by the words Prima Sedes Galliarum, "First Seat of the Gauls", referring to Lyon as the seat of the Primate of the Gauls, and bear the cardinal's motto at the bottom
In multa patientia.
This vase is said to have been given to him by Jean Inabata, a Japanese businessman from Kyoto, a Catholic, who came to Lyon to study dyes for fabrics
