Although born and raised in New York City, Robert Christie has become one of the best known dog and sporting artists in the South. During his highschool days, because of his love of animals, he considered veterinary medicine, but the pull of art proved stronger. After highschool graduation, he studied fine arts at Ohio Wesleyan University for a year and a half before he returned to New York. There he studied illustration at and graduated from Pratt Institute. This was followed by postgraduate study of portrait painting at Pratt and at The Art Students League in New York.Later he moved with his wife, Beth, and their first daughter, Carolyn, to Beth's hometown, Atlanta, Georgia. Here, the main focus was painting portraits and gradually his work was expanded to include equestrian portraits. After a few more years, a publisher in New York asked him to do a series of hunting dog paintings for his print market. That's when Bob got 'bitten' by the dog, and he has been painting them ever since. Along with painting, he has spent over twenty years training, field trailing, hunt testing, and showing his German Shorthairs. You never know when you might see art by Robert Christie. There have been limited edition prints available for over thirty years, as well as his work reproduced on all sorts of products. Hamilton Collection did a set of eight plates of different sporting breeds and Franklin Mint did a set of six plates of Golden Retreiver pups. He did fortyfour paintings to illustrate the book, 'Through Otis' Eyes", which won the Maxwell Award. Next, he did fiftyfour paintings to illustrate the book, "Bailey Bymyside" which won a nomination for that award. There have been loads of ribbons and awards from art shows and dog events that would make a boring list, but it was a lot of fun.During all these years, the family grew to four daughters and one son all now grown up with an addition of eleven grandchildren.
