Property from a private European collection IKEDA KIICHI (1911-1989) A fine lacquer tebako (accessory box)Showa era (1926-1989), circa 1964A tebako of standard twentieth-century form, rectangular with rounded corners and inrobuta (flush-fitting lid), decorated in richly carved and colored lacquer with embellishments and details of gold maki-e, mother-of-pearl, and crushed eggshell, depicting a squirrel sitting on the branch of an oak tree with numerous leaves and acorns, the design extending onto the sides, with silver rimsWith a wood tomobako storage box inscribed and signed Kashiwagi risu tebako Kiichi saku (Accessory box with oak and squirrel, made by Kiichi) and sealed Kiichi within a double-gourd reserve; accompanying resumé with closing date of Showa 39 (1964) 5 3/4 x 10 x 13 3/8in (14.5 x 25.3 x 33.8cm) 注脚 Among the outstanding lacquer artists of Ishikawa Prefecture in the postwar era, Ikeda Kiichi was born in Kaga City and studied for many years under Toyojima Bunshu and Inami Kirokusai. He first exhibited at national level in the 1949 Nitten, switching to the Japan Traditional Crafts exhibition in 1977. He is greatly admired for his success in breathing new life and new subject matter into this most famous of all Japan's regional lacquering traditions.
