Johnson Museum, March 31-July 8, 2007, "Scattered Gold and Midnight Gloss: Japanese Lacquer from the Anbinder Collection"The syllables concealed within the autumn-plant design are taken from poem 201 in the early-tenth century imperial anthology Kokinshu (A Collection of Old and New Poems): Aki no no ni / michi mo madoinu / matsumushi no / koe suru kata ni / yado ya karamashi (Now I've lost my way / in the autumn countryside / where pine crickets call / perhaps I may be able to / find some lodgings over there). As is usual in this type of design, some elements of the poem, in this case including the autumn setting, are expressed in images rather than words. This superb box is one of a series of re-imaginings of classic Muromachi-period (1333–1573) tebako created by Hiradate Shu in the late 1930s and early 1940s and shown regularly at successive Shin Bunten exhibitions as well as the special exhibition held in 1940 to celebrate the 2600th anniversary of the imperial line. Hiradate took the traditional tebako shape as a starting point but modified it with bombé sides; then for the decoration he adapted the time-honored theme of the seven autumn plants, but skillfully combined the polished-out togidashi maki-e technique with fine gold powder to create an enhanced sense of pictorial depth, a feature of many lacquers from this period. The decoration of the interior tray emulates the silk brocade used inside several of the famous medieval tebako.
