拍品描述
Property from a New York collector SHINODA TOKO (1913-2021) Of the MomentHeisei era (1989-2019), 2012Black and red ink on paper, signed To in Japanese and Shinoda in western script, framed and glazed 22 1/4 x 14 3/4in (56.5 x 37.4cm) 注脚 Shinoda Toko, whose death earlier this year at the age of 107 drew international media attention, was born (like Minol Araki, see lots 1102-1108) in the Japanese colonial city of Dairen in northeastern China. Following her family's return to Gifu, Japan, in 1915 she started practicing calligraphy with her father when she was only six years old. Although her formal education was limited, she spent a lot of time studying the Chinese and Japanese classics on her own and decided at a young age that she wanted to be an artist and would therefore avoid the traditional life journey of a Japanese woman at that period: She never married and had no children, but remained very close to her siblings and their children, becoming the matriarch of her extended family.Shinoda, whose early work played on calligraphic forms, had her first Tokyo gallery show in 1936 but gradually moved on from formal calligraphy and by the late 1940s had started to cultivate the style of increasingly abstract painting in sumi ink that soon won her global renown when her work was selected for two exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1953 and 1954. She moved to New York in 1956 and stayed for two years, experiencing the work of the masters of post-war abstract expressionism including Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell, and Kline, selling her work through Betty Parsons, and assembling an impressive list of enthusiastic collectors. Back in Japan, Shinoda developed her distinctive style still further, using a huge array of specially made, often outsize, brushes to create large-format compositions like the present lot. Works by Shinoda are in major public collections throughout Japan, the United States, and Europe.Of the Moment exemplifies Shinoda's flawless control of ink tones, pressure on the brush, and execution of angles, technical achievements that enabled her to create abstract images that expressed every element of her ever-changing character. The three larger elements—a thick, dark stroke with a delicate tassel-like ending achieved by gently lifting the brush; a boldly angled stroke of mid-gray, and a still paler gray block—are offset by red and silver-gray motifs that represent the character for tsuki, moon.
