拍品描述
Property of various owners A BRONZE FUTABANA (FLOWER VASE) Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th centuryWith typical wide flaring mouth and squat body resting on a waisted base, the two handles cast in the form of the leaves, tendrils, and fruit of a gourd vine, the surface except for the body cast with a fine key-fret patternWith a lacquered-wood tomobako storage box 7 1/8in (18.1cm) high 注脚 Starting probably around the middle of the seventeenth century, the futabana (literally, "two-flower") vase became the favored receptacle for formal arrangements in the tall, classical style promoted by the Ikenobo school of ikebana. The cast ornament covering most of the surface of this lot is based on the type of Chinese bronze that was imported into Japan in large quantities during the Muromachi period (1333-1573); see Joe Earle, Flower Bronzes of Japan, London, Michael Goedhuis, 1995, pp.88-94.
