Property of various owners USAMI TAIKI (1794-1872) Birds, flowers and insectsEdo period (1615-1868), circa 1858Kakejiku (hanging scroll) painted in ink and colors on silk depicting a pair of quail beneath a rocky overhang, a pair of white-breasted birds in a blossoming cherry tree, and a cicada and grasshopper in morning glories, coxcomb, peonies, hibiscus, and stalks of millet, with a lengthy inscription, signed Koki, sealed Taiki and with two additional seals 56 1/2 x 27 1/2in (143.5 x 69.8cm) 注脚 A native of Ota in Hitachi Province, Usami Taiki is recorded as having worked in a number of different Chinese and Japanese styles including Northern Song and Shijo. The present lot reflects the influence of the Nagasaki school of painters and in accordance with its Chinese style is signed with an abbreviated version of the artist's family name.
