拍品描述
Rare And Important Yuan Dynasty Jun Yao Bowl:
Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) This Jun bowl is glazed in the traditional complex blue glaze developed in Henan province during the Northern Song and Jin dynasties. Curving sides rise from a short, unglazed foot. The thick pale blue glaze gradates on the exterior in to purple ending in a thick dripping circle onto the unglazed base. The interior is pale blue with a single purple splash. Crystalized patterns are visible near the tan rim. Earthworm tracks and pitting are evident. Jun wares are named after Jun Yao from where they originated. The Jun glaze is renowned throughout the world for its flamboyant bright blue glaze. The color in jun is due to reflected light caused by the glaze structure being opalescent; the minute bubbles and phase separation of the glass as it cools gives an opal effect resulting in a vivid blue appearance. The technique of yaobian was often used, which refers to changing the tints of colors by controlling the temperature of the kiln. The Jun kiln made use of iron and copper colorants to fire an opacified bluish glaze with, in this case, light sky-blue with purple splashes. During the Yuan dynasty, pieces with Jun glaze became available outside of the Imperial court. Jun has been widely copied in China and Japan up until today and is also one of the most difficult types of wares to authenticate. One characteristic of Jun ware is the earthworm-track markings on the surface of the glaze, which rarely occurred on later imitations and many pieces are finely or even coarsely pitted. Provenance: Sold through Parke-Bennett Galleries April 1956 lot 54, then passed by inheritance to current owner.
