拍品描述

NIKE, NIKE AIR DELTA FORCE, SIZE 12

Leather, Rubber, Cotton, Glue, Paint

1987

The 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, marked the formation of the infamous “Dream Team,” one of the greatest basketball rosters ever assembled. It was the first time the US recruited professional NBA players, including Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Magic Johnson. The Dream Team won the Gold, ending a perfect Olympic campaign. Fans were surprised to learn the highest scoring player of the final game was not part of the Dream Team. Dra?en Petrovi?, playing for Croatia, scored 24 points, more than any single player on Team USA. Drazen would win 3 Olympic medals through his career (1984, 1988, 1992).

This pair of Nike Air Delta Force’s is a unique artifact of sports history. Petrovi? preferred Nikes and in an attempt to avoid a break in contract, three Adidas stripes were painted onto Petrovi?’s sneakers. The shoes are white and grey, with three thick stripes painted over the Nike Swoosh on each side panel. Dra?en also painted over Nike logos in white, on the side and heel to hide the branding.

The shoes were worn by Petrovi? at the 1990 FIBA World Cup and on the podium after he and the Yugoslavian National team won the championship. Petrovi? was the first European player drafted to the NBA, joining the Portland Trail Blazers in 1989, and then the New Jersey Nets in 1991. He is credited with opening the door for international talent in the NBA.

In a tragic turn of events, approximately a year after his 1992 Olympic performance, Petrovi? was in an automobile accident that took his life. Famed Croatian basketball coach Aleksandar Petrovi? stated, “It's hard for you to imagine here in America, because you have so many great players, but we are a country of four million; without [Dra?en Petrovi?], basketball takes three steps back.”

The shoes have provenance from the Yugoslavian translator who was responsible for helping the Yugoslavian team communicate with the media. The lot includes photographs of Petrovi?, the Yugoslavian team, and the translator. One of the photos is signed by Petrovi? and another photo is signed by the whole team, including Toni Kukoc and Vlade Divac. James Spence Authentication letters accompany the photos and applicable signatures.

These shoes are also accompanied with a Letter of Opinion from MEARS Authentication, LLC, with an “Authentic” Final Grade.
