JUGYOKU: AN IVORY NETSUKE-OKIMONO OF FISHERMEN TRYING TO TAME THE NAMAZU
Signed Jugyoku
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

The finely stained ivory netsuke, depicting the giant earthquake fish (namazu) and three fishermen trying to tame it, one pulling the fish by one of its whiskers, the second falling over the fish back and the third one crawling on the ground having been toppled over by the large wagging tail. Set on a base with the signature JUGYOKU inside a red-lacquered cartouche.

HEIGHT 4 cm

Condition: Good condition. Possibly an old chip to one of the whiskers.
Provenance: German private collection.
