Early 18th C Japanese Carved Wood "Foreigner" (Gaijin) Lamp showing the Westerner, probably a Sailor with a fat belly, curly hair, and long legs. The eyes are inlaid white & black and is holding a large shell to support a liner for an oil and wick lamp (now missing). The base carved from a log with shallow carving of sand and sea shells. Height with stand 18 1/4 inches (46.5 cm.).
