Most likely inspired by Western oil paintings, Zeshin had pioneered the production of lacquer panels in the 1870s and a particularly fine example was sold in these rooms on 5 November 2014, see The Misumi Collection: Important Works of Lacquer Art and Paintings, Part I, lot 14; for an example of a Zeshin panel incorporating metalwork, see Joe Earle, Masterpieces by Shibata Zeshin, London, The Kibo Foundation, 1996, no.27. For Ishiguro Hiroaki and the better known Ishiguro Masayoshi, see Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, Ellwangen, Germany, Nihon Art Publishers, 2001, nos.H01297 and H04887. The Ishiguro family specialised in lively depictions of birds and the four metal birds applied to this plaque were most likely originally outsize menuki (sword-hilt) ornaments, similar to those by Ishiguro Kanemoto reproduced in Joe Earle, Lethal Elegance: The Art of Samurai Sword Fittings, Boston, MFA Publications, 2004, no.91.The Edward Wrangham Collection of Japanese Art: Part VI, lot 160.www.bonhams.com/auctions/22338/lot/160/
