A George II/III silver mounted mahogany five bottle cruet, London circa 1760 by Thomas Congreave (Grimwade 3815) The turned mahogany frame with a rotating central section with a fret carved galleried edge, upon a scalloped circular foot. The central stem with an opposable silver loop carrying handle. Fitted with five cut clear glass bottles two fitted with stoppers for oil and vinegar, and three silver further bottles for dry mustard, pepper, spice. The three casters fitted with unmarked silver bell form lids surmounted by wrythen finials, two with pierced naught-cross, one blind, heightened with engraving. The carrying handle with makers mark only. Height – 24.3 cm / 9.55 inches Unmarked silver weight – 46 grams / 1.48 ozt Thomas Congreave registered a mark as a large worker 18th September 1756, working from St Thomas Church, Southwark. He died by 1763 when his son William’s apprenticeship was transferred to Richard Clowdesley. This mark is noted on a cream jug of 1759 by Grimwade and would have been in the lost 1758-1773 Largeworkers Register.
