Property from the Estate of Edgar Foster Daniels, Santa Fe, New Mexico Edgar Foster Daniels (1942-2020) was an accomplished actor, singer, and major patron of the arts. Born in North Carolina, young Mr. Daniels gravitated towards the stage instead of his family's newspaper publishing business. He attended University of North Carolina and then Columbia University School of Dramatic Arts. Mr. Daniels spent the first 30 years of his professional career acting on the Broadway stage, as well as in Hollywood films and on television. Upon his retirement from acting, he moved his full-time residence to Santa Fe where he became involved with The Santa Fe Opera. The first production Daniels underwrote at The Santa Fe Opera was Strauss's Daphne in 1981. He founded the Edgar Foster Daniels Foundation in Santa Fe in 1995. He was the first recipient of the Best Philanthropist/Sponsor Award at the inaugural International Opera Awards in 2014. Mr. Daniels has supported numerous other arts organizations in New Mexico, including Performance Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, New Mexico School for the Arts, and the Spanish Colonial Arts Society. He was also an avid collector of New Mexican artwork and has supported the careers of many local visual artists. As one of opera's greatest benefactors and most passionate fans, Mr. Daniels held leadership positions with the world's most prestigious opera companies and music festivals. He was a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera, where he underwrote several iconic productions. He was a life director of Lyric Opera of Chicago and served on the boards of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, Washington National Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, Houston Grand Opera, the Manhattan School of Music, and the North Carolina Symphony. He traveled the world to see great opera and had a long relationship with San Francisco Opera, Bayreuth Festival and Salzburg Festival. Composer Tobias Picker dedicated two of his operas, An American Tragedy and Th??r?¨se Raquin to Edgar in honor of his remarkable generosity and commitment to opera in America. Opera enthusiasts from all over the globe traveled to Santa Fe and enjoyed parties hosted by Mr. Daniels in his stunning hacienda in the foothills near the spectacular facilities of the Santa Fe Opera. At these events, Mr. Daniels welcomed visiting guests, artists, cast and crew where resplendently dressed opera aficionados engaged in lively conversation, while enjoying performances by various musical guests and flowing fine wine.
