, Qing Dynasty, late 18th century or early 19th century, the centre painted with a view of boats, trees and pagodas on islands, the pagoda to the right possibly inspired by a view of the West lake of Hangchow, the everted rim with a geometric pattern, and the exterior with flowering peony, lotus, chrysanthemum and prunus branches, a hole for drainage to one side, 69cm diameter x 19cm high, on circular mahogany stand on four scroll legs
Provenance: From the collection of Sir David and Lady Scholey.
Large basins such as the present example were probably used as bathing tubs, which would include a pierced hole for convenient drainage. A virtually identical example was sold at Christie's, The Cowdray Sale: Works of Art from Cowdray Park and Dunecht House, At Cowdray Park, West Sussex, 15th September 2013, lot 13
A similar example is illustrated in Jean McClure Mudge, Chinese Export Porcelain for the American Trade, 1785-1835, 1981, Delaware, fig. 71, from the collection of the Museum of the American Trade.
