Fired clay. Pre-Columbian America, Colima, West Mexico, approx.13th cent. (time examined)
Rare, powerfully designed figural vessel depicting a man sitting in front of a drum. The drum is barrel-shaped, upon which both hands are resting, legs and feet to the sides. The facial features are strongly expressive, very broad, half-open mouth, pointy nose, big cap with middle ridge, as well as round ornament. On the back of the man, who wears neck cuff and apron, arises a big funnel as vessel opening in a light arch. Painting with earth-red and white. Restoration to the funnel, complete good condition. The Colima Culture is named after the Mexican city Colima, where it was situated approx. 200 BC to 400.
