Iris (Ayame 菖蒲). Original color woodblock print, published mid 1830′s. Signed: Hiroshige hitsu. Publisher: Shoeido.
Hiroshiges Tanzaku prints with animal and plant motifs mostly originated in the third, fourth and fifth year of the Tempo Era(1832 - 34), almost the same time as his first major landscape series. In these graphic jewels, the master reveals his sense for the poetry of nature and the mood of the moment, often also reflected in a lyrical, calligraphically written poem.
