Painting with ink on silk. Japan, 19th cent.
In the center is a large and very realistic Tanuki depiction, a furry "marten dog" with bushy tail observing a grasshopper (or cricket). Very nicely painted thick fur with lively washes from light to black-grey. In the uppermost picture area, the full moon is the center of attention, lightly draped by clouds and some branches in front hanging from a wise man reaching to the center of the composition. Left below the signature TESSAN (TETSU-ZAN) 徹 山 and two red seals Tetsuzan and Shushin. Mori Tessan was trained by Maruyama Okyo in Kyoto. Montierung with brocade, ivory rollers.
